Martin Fondse - Guest of honor at the 1st Jazz@Villebaudon edition

Martin Fondse – Faces of Earth

Pianist and composer Martin Fondse presents with his Diamonds trio (feat. Margriet Sjoerdsma & Qniverse) the project ‘Faces of Earth | Diamonds’ – a stunning exploration of the diamond in all its facets, but also a controversial story about the brilliance and power of diamonds during the colonial era.

Fondse, who plays piano, Fender Rhodes and vibrandoneon, leads a hybrid trio with Dutch Margriet Sjoerdsma as vocalist and the originally Chinese Qniverse as musical sparring partners. A beautiful balance between experience and emerging talent. A strong mix of diverse musical styles with the connecting compositions of Martin Fondse as a powerful centrepiece.

Margriet Sjoerdsma & Qniverse add text to the story, with poetry by among others Shakespeare, like a chorus from a Greek tragedy. The flexibility of this ensemble – almost every musician/singer also plays multiple instruments – creates a kaleidoscopic sound world.

Faces of Earth consists of musical portraits of remarkable trees, composed in close collaboration with the individual musicians of the Martin Fondse Diamonds trio. Each player gives voice to their own ‘kindred’ tree. Centuries of poetry and stories are woven throughout, from Gilgamesh to Shakespeare, indigenous poets to contemporary, original song lyrics.

This hybrid ensemble offers a rich palette of sounds that brings this new music to life. Alongside Faces of Earth, excerpts from the recently created work Diamonds will also be performed, as well as original compositions by Margriet Sjoerdsma and Qniverse.

Line-up: DIAMONDS trio

Margriet Sjoerdsma vocals, Qniverse flutes/vocals, Martin Fondse piano/keyboards/electronics.

Sylvain Duthuillé is a jazz pianist recognized on the Breton scene for his fluid, sensitive playing, attentive to other musicians. His world mixes traditional jazz, modern influences, and improvisation. After several years spent in Africa, particularly in Mozambique, he enriched his music with multiple rhythmic colors. Alongside him, Sophie Robic develops an elegant and warm repertoire, nourished by French chanson and great American standards.

Her expressive voice and sense of swing allow her to perform as well in intimate duos as in larger ensembles. Companions for more than fifteen years, their musical sensitivities were meant to meet. Together, they bring the City Steps project to life, a universe mixing poetry, jazz, and contemporary influences. Here, they offer us a journey between their own compositions and those of great jazz singers
